Software Engineers
VoltDB is a horizontally scalable, in-memory SQL RDBMS designed for applications that have extremely high read and write throughput requirements. Co-founded in 2009 by DBMS R&D industry pioneer Dr. Michael Stonebraker, VoltDB is revolutionizing the database market with a break-through, open source SQL DBMS (New SQL) for applications with large, fast-growing transaction processing (OLTP) workloads.
There are lots of fun and challenging problems to solve at VoltDB: data management (on disk and in memory), performance (SQL algorithmic and I/O related), and distributed systems work (redundancy, failure recovery, cluster load balancing). The product core is open source, and there are opportunities to contribute, as well as talk to customers and to the broader community, if desired.
We’re looking for the best and brightest junior- and senior-level engineers to help us take VoltDB to the next level. In this position you will:
- Architect, design and implement new VoltDB features such as dynamic cluster re-sizing, high availability, SQL enhancements, Data larger than memory support, management tools, etc.
- Work with the field and business teams to understand user feature requests.
- Create unit, regression, performance tests as part of feature development
- Mentor community contributors and review contributions
- Represent VoltDB in various industry and user forums
The core skills we’re looking for include:
- Fluent in Java. C/C++ skills a big plus.
- Significant experience developing UNIX/Linux systems software.
- Agile software development experience.
- BS CS or MS CS (preferred)
A specialty in one of these areas would make the candidate ideal:
- Database Internals
- SQL, query optimization and execution
- UI/UX expertise (Web, GWT)
Experience in any of these areas is “nice to have”:
- Open Source software development
- Programming experience in Python, Ruby, PHP, JavaScript/Node.js and other popular Web 2.0 languages
- Cloud, Amazon EC2
- Hadoop, No SQL, MySQL/memcached, sharding

Sales Engineer / Community Advocate
VoltDB is a startup, and everyone's contributions count big time. We all get to learn as much as we want about the business, the community, and the customers, as well as the product. The codebase is young/fresh/small, and it's solid - but there is a lot more out there to do. We've got a great base to grow on, and a lot of growing in front of us. The product is standards-based, using SQL as our DDL and query language; and Java as our primary programming language.
One thing that makes working with VoltDB special is that our product is commercial open source. So, in addition to our customers we foster a growing and enthusiastic community of open source users. There are no secrets when your source code and ticket tracking system are publicly available. Everyone at VoltDB works with our community members to improve and enhance VoltDB, and they can do that with new features mid release. VoltDB community members routinely take a look at upcoming features and beta releases, and give us great feedback on usability and issues they encounter. Sounds like heaven, right?
VoltDB is selectively recruiting for a sales engineer/community advocate to help build the VoltDB user base and community: work with sales and users to develop, deploy, and build VoltDB applications and help users get productive with VoltDB.
Responsibilities
- Discuss and explain VoltDB technology with new users, in person, by phone, and with social media in both sales situations as well as for community development
- Work with sales to manage customer accounts from a technical perspective and provide sales support
- Help users deploy proof of concept applications
- Be an evangelist for the VoltDB product online and at events
- Install and run VoltDB and associated applications at user locations, in the cloud, and for demonstrations
- Use collaboration tools for community building, evangelism and sales support
- Inspire enthusiasm for the development and use of VoltDB in the broader community
- ~ 15% travel (US)
Requirements
- Have Experience working directly with customers
- Have a Bachelor or Masters of Science in Computer Science/Computer Engineering or equivalent experience
- Be well versed in SQL
- Be familiar with database design and building applications for MySQL, Oracle, or other databases
Experience in any of the following is highly desirable:
- Programming experience in Java, Python/Perl, and shell scripting
- Know Linux (Ubuntu, Centos, Redhat, or Debian)
- Community building
- NoSQL, in-memory or data warehouse systems

Social Marketing Manager
VoltDB’s Social Marketing Manager will be responsible for driving the Company’s social media initiatives – from strategy through implementation – to build brand visibility, generate inbound website traffic and stimulate progressive engagement. Reporting to VoltDB’s VP of Marketing, the Social Marketing Manager will coordinate closely with Company evangelists, content developers and programs leaders to insure consistency of voice and to gain maximum leverage from complementary activities. The ideal candidate for this role will possess the ability to think strategically, and the skill/passion to personally implement many of the defined activities.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development of the Company’s social media strategy including identification of relevant social media destinations, best practices for leveraging those outlets, and calendar for organized interaction.
- Coordinate with evangelist and content development stakeholders across the Company to ensure that the highest levels of visibility are achieved through the identified social outlets.
- Manage presence in all key social media outlets including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and on defined influencer destinations (Quora, StackOverflow, HighScalability.com, GigaOM, Wikipedia, etc.). Develop proactive plans for building presence on these destinations, and Company best practices for high performance reaction/response.
- Coordinate social media activities with Company PR, product, event and marketing schedules.
- Manage social media campaigns and day-to-day activities including online advocacy, content development and community outreach.
- Drive the Company’s proactive and reactive blogging strategy, including development/oversight of the blog calendar.
- Identify, source and operate tools designed to optimize/measure social media performance. Define and monitor social media KPIs and report on campaign effectiveness.
Requirements
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms and their respective participants (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, etc.) and how they can be best leveraged n different scenarios.
- Knowledge of blogging ecosystem relevant to users of database software (developers, analysts, rainmakers, academics, etc.).
- Strong understanding of SEO principles.
- Excellent writing and verbal skills are a must. Website page design skills a plus.
- High degree of proficiency with MS Office products. Technically agile enough to quickly master new tools and SaaS applications.
- Strongly self-directed, with excellent project management and organizational skills.
- 5-7 years of experience in Marketing/PR, with at least 3 years of direct experience in social media marketing.
- Team player with the confidence to lead and the passion to do a significant amount of hands-on execution.
- BS in Marketing, Communications or related field. MBA strongly preferred.

Software Engineer in Test

We’re looking for an Agile-minded Software Engineer in Test. In this position you will:
- Be a part of an Agile Team delivering the best-in-breed high velocity transactional Database.
- Design and implement automation frameworks, integration tools, and test scripts to exercise new features of VoltDB, including enhancements to cluster scaling, management tools, extensions of SQL capabilities, improvements to performance and memory use, etc.
- Work in engineering team to make suggestions and improvements to testability, usability, scalability and performance.
- Work with management and engineering to define acceptance criteria for new features.
- Investigate, debug, and triage and report issues found in the automated tests.
The core skills we’re looking for include:
- Fluent in 2 or more development languages, such as Java, C++, Python, Ruby, etc.
- Experience with distributed middleware or back-end software.
- Experience in implementing automation frameworks or other process tools.
- Proficiency in a Unix/Linux environment.
- An understanding of databases and SQL.
