The 5 Principles of VoltDB

VoltDB was designed using a fundamentally different approach than any other database product on the market. Born out of academic research at MIT, Yale, and Brown, VoltDB is positioned at the center of five converging principles – all of which enable infinite possibilities in application design.
  1. Data is the new disruption.
Just in the way the Internet and client-server technologies were revolutionary, data is now transforming the world and how we interact within it. We’ve moved from data being the exhaust of an application to being the fuel.
  2. The value of data changes continuously.
As you move from interactive applications that use data to drive decisioning in milliseconds, to real-time analytics that occur in a split-second, to post-event and exploratory analytics that take place minutes or hours later, the value of an individual piece of data declines and the value of aggregated data increases. For today’s transactional applications, the maximum business impact comes at the front end of this cycle – at the precise moment the data arrives.
  3. Velocity changes everything.
The Big Data opportunity exists because of the velocity of data intake, not just the amount of data. Conventional databases implode with the velocity that data is being delivered today. And data velocity is only going to increase as the number of data sources increases and the time-to-action on that data approaches zero.
  4. The next generation of OLTP is now.
We’ve seen the future and it is radically evolving yesterday’s technology. Database solutions must now be able to ingest massive amounts of data at high speeds with complete accuracy, make decisions on data the moment it arrives, and perform analytics on this data in real time.
  5. Without a closed loop it’s a bottomless pit.
To maximize the business value of your data, it needs to be used continuously, whether it’s for real-time decisioning or routine reporting and exploration. Without a closed loop where all forms of analytics are fed back into the decision-making process, data can’t inform the front end of the application that is acting on new data as it arrives – it falls into the bottomless pit of data collection, and business value is lost.

Because VoltDB is at the convergence point of these five principles, you can build applications that handle nearly infinite scalability and velocity. Applications that let you make decisions as events unfold. VoltDB lets you disrupt the status quo and realize true business value in the process. VoltDB can completely change your game.

Dr. Michael Stonebraker on “What Does Big Data Mean?”

Check out this three-part series from VoltDB co-founder and database pioneer, Dr. Michael Stonebraker, as he cuts through the Big Data hype and gives his perspective on what it all really means to the future of application development.

STONEBRAKER LIVE! 2013 - Cambridge
Watch VoltDB's Dr. Michael Stonebraker of MIT, UC Berkeley, and Ingres and Postgres fame present the founding principles of solving modern data-velocity problems: "Data is growing faster than hard drives," "Move the computation to the data, never move the data to the computation," "Bet on main memory because there's no other way to go fast," and "Run transactions to completion, and you eliminate locking and multithreading," are central to his beliefs.
