Building a Cluster on a Limited Budget

In April 2010 we built a “budget cluster” to facilitate additional VoltDB testing (we already had a 12-node Dell R710 cluster). The requirement was to build a complete 6 server VoltDB cluster for less than the cost of a single R710 (much less actually). With a budget of $4,000 we decided to buy the individual parts and build the machines by hand. Everything was purchased from MonoPrice.

Parts for each Server
- CPU = AMD Phenom II X4 945 ($150.99)
- Memory (8GB) = Crucial Technology CT2CP25664AA800 4GB Memory Kit (2 x $88.99)
- Hard Drive = Seagate

In-memory database sizing – throw out conventional wisdom

Sizing an in-memory database does not follow conventional database sizing rules.

For traditional databases, you buy a decent server machine, likely one with many CPU cores and reasonable memory, and then focus on application IOPS (I/O Operations per Second). If you are really going to stress the database, you must choose disks that can support the I/O needs of your application, today and in the future. Because these systems often use many disks to achieve high I/O performance, capacity is usually an afterthought.

You’ve probably heard about the VoltDB, the super fast distributed ACID SQL RDBMS for OLTP, but you might not be aware of its throughput capabilities in detail. VoltDB achieves its high throughput by eliminating the locking and latching of conventional databases. The development team at VoltDB recently ran VoltDB v4.2 against the Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB), an industry-standard performance benchmark for cloud databases. We ran our test on as realistic a cluster setup as possible: commodity hardware that we could easily book as spot instances on EC2, with features like durability and high availability enabled. And we ran a varied mix of workloads with realistically sized, 1 KB rows, rather than focusing on a specific, overly favorable use case.
